A jaw-dropping statistic has been in the news over the past few weeks; for three years in a row now, planet Earth has experienced record high temperatures.
In a terrifying warning in January, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said 2016 was the hottest year since record-keeping began in 1880. The global temperature surpassed the previous record set in 2015, which itself had topped a record set in 2014.
This highlights the pressing need to tackle global warming through sustainable development. However, if the solution to the problem of climate change is sustainability, then the solution must itself be sustainable. In other words, we must meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
One way to achieve this is to maintain a laser-like focus on – and bone-deep commitment to – energy efficiency because cutting consumption limits the production of harmful greenhouse emissions such as carbon dioxide.
Indeed, energy efficiency is arguably the single most important challenge facing the domestic heating sector. Space heating is responsible for around two-thirds of the energy consumed in houses.
